Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA)

The Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is a week long residential program conducted annually and is aimed at encouraging and developing leadership, personal development and social skills.

As a consequence, awardees, aged between 18 and 25 years can more effectively contribute to their communities in a practical manner. RYLA provides opportunities for young people from a diverse range of backgrounds to come together to gain a better understanding of their own strengths and the unique qualities and abilities of others.

Each Rotary club is invited to nominate, sponsor or part-sponsor a potential young leader and provide practical support and encouragement. Wherever possible, awardees should be invited to meet their sponsorship club members prior to the seminar and to report back after its conclusion.

Maintaining contact with awardees is desirable, as they can be a valuable resource for the development of ongoing youth programs. During the RYLA program there is a formal dinner to which Rotarians are invited as visitors, so awardees can relate the experiences to sponsoring club members.

The RYLA Committee ensures that a stimulating and informative program is presented which features prominent, successful young business and professional people who have a proven record of achievement.

The program is delivered by young people for young people and is held in December each year. Participants can nominate themselves to participate, or be nominated by their local Rotary club. The selection process includes a written application.

To date 15 young East Timorese residents have visited Australia to attend RYLA. This is an expanding, multi-district objective to have East Timor RYLArians conduct their own RYLA refresher courses in Timor Leste.

RYLA Camp dates for 2017 are Sunday 3rd December to Saturday 9 December 2017.

Saturday 7th December is 'Rotary night' where club members are invited to attend a dinner hosted by the RYLArians at the camp and be entertained through a performance prepared by the attendees.
