Content Item - Camberwell Rotary Shop is now the Good Reads Good Deeds Rotary Shop

By David Owen, Hawthorn Rotary

The Camberwell Rotary shop has changed its name. It is still at 654 Burke Road at the back facing the car park side.It is now the "Good Reads Good Deeds Rotary Shop".

This Boroondara multi-club enterprise was set up by DIK Inc clubs and Riverside cluster clubs.  Its aim is to support the Donations in Kind store, which recycles equipment and goods and sends useful items overseas and to disadvantaged communities in Australia. It also  supports Rotary Fair Trade enterprises in East Timor, Nepal and Laos, and Camcare, a not-for-profit, community based organization, which assists people from Boroondara and neighbouring areas who are facing personal hardship or difficult life circumstances.

Content Item - Donations in Kind Open Day

When communicating just what Donations in Kind at West Footscray can provide presents such a problem  – how do we address the challenge? Why not throw open the doors and invite everyone along to see.  Add scones and cream, tasty Somaliland nibbles and the essential sausage sizzle and see what happens.

That’s just what we did on Saturday 8th April to celebrate the shipping of the 500th Container from the store and also mark the centenary of the Rotary Foundation.

Content Item - Linen Supplied for Servants Community Housing

The Rotary Club of North Balwyn has delivered 200 sets bed linen and 200 towels to Servants Community Housing, which provides safe and affordable housing for people in need in the City of Boroondara.

The quality linen had been transferred to the Donations In Kind Store in Footscray  from mining operations in Western Australia where it was no longer required at “fly-in fly-out” mining facilities because of the downturn in the industry.

Content Item - Used Bed Linen Recycling Project

By Chris Herrmann For Rotary Club of Mill Point, W.A.

The purpose of the project was to recycle used Linen from Rio Tinto in the Pilbara to overseas charities through Rotary International Donations-In-Kind, Melbourne.

Sixty-two pallet cartons were transported free of charge by LinFox, from Perth to Melbourne over December 2016 and January 2017. The material was laundered and much of it was in an as-new condition.  DIK have been coordinating with Linfox to hold the cartons as required pending space in the DIK store.

Content Item - Christmas 24/7

It happened to be the week before Christmas in Balibo, Timor Leste, but it could have been in any of the 25 countries we have shipped goods to, at any time of the year.  It could have been Mrs Jones in your suburb who received her Rotary Wheelchair from her occupational therapist.

The attached letter highlights how cheap and easy it is to improve people’s lives utilising the goods available from Donations In Kind.  It cost $50.00 to ship each wheelchair.   Your Store contains 3400m2 of opportunities for you to help others.

If you don’t have a project Laurie Fisher 0428 550 574 dik.vic.rotary@gmail.com would be happy to recommend some.

Have a look at the attached and brighten your day.

Content Item - Recognition for a Donations in Kind Volunteer

By Laurie Fisher, Rotary Club of West Footscray

Helen Sully first came to Donations in Kind as a volunteer in 2004: her initial contact was through John Gordon, a long time stalwart of DIK. John used to collect the knitted baby clothing from a group established by Helen and donated to DIK. He encouraged Helen to become directly involved at the store itself. Once there, she soon became a permanent fixture.

Content Item - Joyrumkura Hospital Container

By Janne Speirs,  Rotary Club of Traralgon

In 1964 in Joyrumkura (Northern Bangladesh), a hospital built by the Australian Baptist Missionary Society and staffed by Australian Missionary Doctors and nurses (initially) opened for the local people. This was, and still remains, an extremely poor rural area with a high infant mortality rate and the hospital was a major care centre and teaching facility. At the same time, Bill McFarlane from Adelaide, was visiting in a new role with the ABMS. On that first of many visits (his last in 2003) Bill felt a compassion and abiding love for this struggling country which, from twelve years old, I grew up with and still feel myself.

Michele is a Palms Australia volunteer based in Balibo living in the Accommodation unit that Rotary helped to build with a Rotary Foundation Grant. She sent a request to Roger (Rotary Club of Pakenham): "We are trying to source a wheelchair for a 12 y.o mentally and physically disabled girl. Her only mode of transport is being carried by her mother. She came to our attention through the Dental Clinic as she lives in
one of Balibo's outlying villages."

Donations In Kind is the answer for many hospitals when they have goods they no longer require. This is what Barwon Health has done at their McKellar Centre.   It is always a pleasure to work with an organization that cares.   They know that through Rotary they will go to a hospital in desperate need.

Content Item - Australian No-man’s Land

I am in the Donations In Kind Store surrounded by valuable medical equipment.  I am looking at the latest batch of Dialysis Chairs and wondering where they will go.  Will they go overseas as many have in the past?

What about the remote areas in Australia, where this sort of equipment appears to be needed?    If we are going to use the equipment in Australia it can’t be on an International Project.  It would have to be a Community Project, but what do Clubs perceive as being their community?   If it is limited to working in your own backyard helping in other parts of Australia is beyond our Clubs.  Is there a “no man’s land” between our backyard and overseas?   This is not the Rotary way and we know that this is not how Rotarians feel, but is appears no RABS project are working on improving medical care.

Content Item - Challenge your thinking with Donations in Kind

At times we all fall into this trap. When you think hospitals, what do you see? Doctors, Nurses, Patients, Operations, the things we see when we visit, or on TV. We forget that they are complex businesses with administration divisions, and have sophisticated catering services that feed hundreds of people each day. Today hospitals want to recycle all of the material they no longer require and it is a pleasure to announce that we have formed a relationship with Northern Health to help them do this.
