Content Item - My MUNA experience: Reflections 4 years on

By Peggy Gusah

Looking back on my time doing MUNA in 2013 I have nothing but fond memories. I loved the experience of in debating at Camp Getaway in Axedale representing Germany. I remember making an accusation to the delegation of the US that they were “sacrificing the rights of children on the altar of material gain” or something equally as dramatic. Classic semantic choices of an 18-year-old.

By Joseph Hinchliffe, Bendigo Advertiser, May 28, 2016

“Mr Secretary General,” the delegation from Mali began her speech on the weekend: “Turkey made a, frankly, hilarious report on North Korea to which Mali is strongly opposed.” The delegate went onto explain how collapse of the regime would destabilise the region.

The speech did not occur in New York, but in Axedale and the delegate was 17-year-old Alice Lamont from Footscray. Ms Lamont was one of 36 students from across Rotary’s 9800 District to descend on Camp Getaway this weekend for the annual Model United Nations Assembly. Grouped into pairs representing their schools, the students were assigned a nation to represent and tasked with forming blocs and arguing resolutions.

Content Item - Small Canberra club runs big MUNA event

By Tony Thomas, Rotary Club of Central Melbourne Sunrise

Bob Nield, past president of Canberra Sunrise Rotary Club, dropped in on a city club meeting on December 2.

His club’s flagship project is the mid-August annual Rotary National Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA), held in the House of Reps chamber in the old Parliament House. The club has run this for 18 years. This event has attracted up to 34 teams of 2-3 mainly Year 11 students, each team representing a UN country in a debating context. Many teams are sent from interstate Rotary clubs. The students usually get to meet the Governor-General at Government House and the major sponsor, the Australian National University, puts on a dinner for the students with a prestigious academic speaker. Organising the MUNA is a year-round job for the club, which is already working on the 2015 event.*

Content Item - Model United Nations Assembly

Fri 25th May 2018 to Sunday 27th May 2018

This international youth program simulates the workings of the United Nations Assembly by having two senior students from a number of schools represent a particular UN country in debates on matters of world political and social concern.

Youth Exchange students can also participate. The assembly is about building bridges of goodwill for world peace and understanding through a personal involvement in the acceptance of situations that reflect the opinion of ‘adopted’ countries. Students are challenged by the opportunities of extended research, debating and public speaking skills by addressing a wide range of contemporary and world-focussed issues. The program extends over a weekend and it is chaired and judged by Rotarians.
