Letters From Abroad

As we launch Edition 5 of our much-acclaimed D9800 Youth Exchange publication ‘Letters From Abroad’, it makes us at the D9800 Youth Exchange Committee very proud indeed of the achievements of each of our Outbound Rotary Youth Exchange Students.  It is pleasing to read of the diversity of opportunities and experiences that Rotary International has provided for each of our D9800 Students.  On occasions, whilst on Rotary Youth Exchange, our students need to step out of their comfort zones, to manage a range of challenging issues.  Each student often requires courage, resilience and the network of support and expertise offered by Rotary International.  At the outset, we like to instil in each of our students, as they prepare to travel, a sense of responsibility and resilience, which in many instances enhances their overall overseas experiences.

Content Item - The Rotary Youth Public Speaking Program (RYPS)

The Rotary Youth Public Speaking Program (RYPS) is a District 9800 endorsed Youth program. This program is designed for secondary school aged students throughout District 9800.

District 9800 clubs are encouraged to initiate their own school public speaking programs. They may use templates created for either: WYNSPEAK ‘Wyndham Youth Public Speaking Competition’ (a long standing and highly successful public speaking competition held in the western suburbs of Melbourne, and jointly run by the Rotary and Apex Clubs of Hoppers Crossing), or, the long standing Ainger Award, jointly run by the Rotary Clubs of Richmond and Melbourne Park. If you prefer to follow the Ainger Award Model, the Rotary Clubs of Richmond and Melbourne Park can assist you.

A District 9800 Rotary Youth Public Speaking Program Committee has been established and its members are available to assist clubs in establishing programs.

Content Item - District 9800 Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA)

Is your club thinking about sponsoring a young person to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA)? Being a Rotarian, I was familiar with the program on a superficial level. However, last year I was afforded the privilege of attending RYLA as a participant. Prior to attending, I thought I understood the merits of Rotary programs, yet I can honestly say that the experience exceeded all of my expectations. RYLA has given me the tools I needed to thrive in my life, and I will be forever grateful for such an opportunity. It is with absolute confidence that I say any participant you sponsor will share my gratitude.

Content Item - Youth Suicide Awareness

Youth suicide is the last taboo. Rotary however can help address this tragedy by supporting teachers, police officers, social workers and mental health clinicians to better understand the many challenges faced by today’s young people.

Clubs can provide scholarships to assist professionals to undertake a Graduate Diploma in Adolescent Health at the University of Melbourne and thus offer a simple, practical way of addressing mental illness in adolescence.

Content Item - What happens on Safari .......

Emanuel Tumino, Rotary Club of Footscray was one of 3 Leaders for the 2012 Safari, the others being Rotarians Mary Parks and Geoff Asher.  In 2012, the bus stopped early on a Saturday morning for a toilet/coffee break at a place called Julia Creek along the Flinders Highway, in the desert and deep in the outback of Queensland.  The “town” had a few shops, a handful of houses and a population of perhaps 100  people - a desolate place, where Australia Post had the only cappuccino machine in “town”.

Content Item - Youth Exchange Letters 2012

For Most Rotarians the Youth Exchange Program has always been a part of Rotary and a significant part of that.  In fact the program started way back in 1927 with exchanges between Denmark and the USA.  Many other exchanges quickly followed and between different countries.

The stories displayed in this 2012 edition of 'Letters from Abroad' are inspirational and we thank our Outbound Students for their contribution to this unique District 9800 Publication.

Youth Exchange students can also participate. The assembly is about building bridges of goodwill for world peace and understanding through a personal involvement in the acceptance of situations that reflect the opinion of ‘adopted’ countries. Students are challenged by the opportunities of extended research, debating and public speaking skills by addressing a wide range of contemporary and world-focussed issues.
